1: There are two currents of thoughts: conscious and subconscious. While we are awake, they're both active and while asleep – only the latter one. It is always active.

2: There is one current of thought. While awake, we're aware of it, but while asleep - not or not fully. The means of expression change: while awake they are coherent words, images and ideas, whilst while dreaming, they are mostly images and experiences (always accompanied by a string of words/expressions, i.e. subconscious speech of the sleeping one, but which is lost very fast upon awakening). Actually exactly this subconscious speech during sleep is guiding the development of our dreams. Even here there are logical relationships with reality (like conscious thought), but they aren't as strongly expressed, but are rather impulsive, primary, unrefined thoughts, which we're used to put into order instantly while awake. We do this, because it's hard getting anything done with chaos raging in our head, but mainly so that we could make our thoughts more comprehensible, enabling others to understand what we mean. Due to the fact that the parts of our brains responsible for critical thought and problem-solving are inactive while asleep, it is typical for more willful, crazier and sillier thoughts to surface and us being more assertive and impulsive while dreaming. All the same, our mind has to rest, while we sleep and process all the information received while awake indeed through dreams (brain activity – theta brainwave, REM (rapid eye movement) phase).
Well, those are my hypotheses based on my personal experience and information on the subject. Please don't hesitate to express your own opinion on the subject too! :aww:

Another hypothesis of mine (about subconsious memory):
